1.Paste or type a sentence
2.Click the words to blank out
- c1mitochondria
- c2powerhouse
3.Choose how to split the cards
Each blank becomes its own card (c1, c2, …) — you review one gap at a time.
The […] is the powerhouse of the cell.
The {{c1::mitochondria}} is the {{c2::powerhouse}} of the cell. This is standard Anki cloze syntax — you can paste it straight into a Cloze note in Anki.
Double-click the downloaded .apkg to open it in Anki. The deck includes a cloze note type with the typing box built in — nothing to configure.
What is a cloze deletion?
A cloze deletion is a fill-in-the-blank flashcard: you take a sentence, hide a word or phrase, and recall it at review. Instead of a bare question-and-answer pair, the fact stays embedded in the context where you met it — which is exactly how you'll need to retrieve it later.
Anki has first-class support for this card style. Text wrapped in {{c1::…}} becomes a blank on the front of the card and is revealed on the back. Cloze cards are beloved for a reason: they're the fastest card type to make from real material — a textbook line, a lecture note, a sentence from a novel — and they test recall in context rather than recognition in isolation.
Typing {{c2::…}} by hand is fiddly, one missing brace silently breaks the card. This page handles that for you: click the words, check what each card will look like, and export as an Anki file (apkg) without any configuration.
How to write cloze cards worth reviewing
Cloze cards are easy to make and just as easy to make badly. Four habits that keep them effective:
One fact per blank
A blank should test a single word or tight phrase. If you're hiding half the sentence, split it into more blanks — or more cards.
Keep enough context
The visible words must make the answer recallable. "The ___ is the powerhouse of the cell" works; "The ___ is the ___ of the ___" doesn't.
Use hints for near-synonyms
When several answers would fit, add a hint — a part of speech, a first letter, or a category — so grading yourself stays honest.
Put translations in Extra
Learning a language? Add the sentence's translation to the Extra field. It shows on the back, right when you check your answer.

Cloze card questions, answered
How do I import the downloaded file into Anki?
Double-click cloze-cards.apkg to open it in Anki. You can also use File → Import (or press Ctrl+Shift+I). Anki imports the typing-enabled note type and the wordwise.me cloze cards deck automatically. If you turned off Type in the answer, select cloze-cards.txt through File → Import instead; its import headers configure the Cloze note type, tab separator, and field mapping, so you only need to pick a deck and confirm.
What does {{c1::word}} mean in Anki?
That's Anki's cloze deletion syntax. Text wrapped in {{c1::…}} is hidden on the front of the card and revealed on the back. The number groups blanks into cards: every c1 is hidden on card 1, every c2 on card 2, and so on. You can also add a hint after a second double colon, like {{c1::madrugar::verb}} — the hint shows inside the blank on the front.
Should each blank be its own card, or all on one card?
For most learning, one card per blank (c1, c2, …) works better: each review tests exactly one piece of information, which keeps recall focused and grading honest. Hiding all blanks together on one card is useful when the pieces only make sense as a set — a full verb conjugation, a date paired with an event, or a line you want to memorize verbatim. The tool supports both; try each and see what sticks.
Can I type the answer instead of just revealing it?
Yes — check Type in the answer next to the download button. The download becomes an Anki deck file (.apkg) that bundles a cloze note type with Anki's {{type:cloze:Text}} template built in: reviews show a typing box, and Anki marks your answer against the hidden text letter by letter. This works best with one card per blank; with all blanks on one card, Anki expects every hidden word typed comma-separated.
Can I make cloze cards in languages other than English?
Yes — the creator handles any language, including accented characters, Cyrillic, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and Arabic. For language learners, the Extra field is a natural place for a translation of the sentence. And if you look up words while reading online, the Anki Dictionary extension builds full Anki cards automatically in 20+ languages.
