Refresh pages after installing

Installed the extension but nothing happens when you try to look up a word? The page was probably open before you installed. Refresh it and you're good to go.

Why this happens

Browser extensions can only inject into pages that load after the extension is installed. Any tab you had open before installing won't have Anki Dictionary running on it — the browser didn't know to inject it yet.

How to fix it

  1. Go to the tab where Anki Dictionary isn't working.
  2. Press F5 or Ctrl+R (Cmd+R on Mac) to refresh.
  3. Try looking up a word using your configured trigger (the default is Ctrl+double-click, or Cmd+double-click on Mac) — the Anki Dictionary popup should appear. You can change the trigger key in settings.

Closing the tab and reopening it works too. Either way, the page just needs to load fresh with the extension active.

Still not working?

  • Some pages can't run extensions: chrome:// URLs, the Chrome Web Store, and browser built-in pages are restricted by the browser.
  • Make sure the extension is enabled — click the puzzle-piece icon in your toolbar and check that Anki Dictionary is toggled on.
