Turn off reverse cards

Every word you export becomes two Anki cards by default: a basic card (word on front, definition on back) and a reverse card (definition on front, word on back). If you only want the first one, switch off one setting.

Switch off reverse cards in settings

  1. Click the Anki Dictionary icon in your browser toolbar, then the gear icon in the top right to open Settings.
  2. Scroll to Anki Connect Integration. The reverse card option only shows while Enable Anki Connect Integration is on.
  3. Turn off Export reverse cards. It saves right away, no button to press.

From now on, exporting a word from the lookup popup creates only the basic card.

Exporting from Lookup History has its own checkbox

Bulk exports from the Lookup History page don't read the setting above. Select a few words there and you'll see an Include reverse card checkbox next to the export buttons. Untick it. It applies to both export to Anki and the .txt download, and the page remembers your choice for next time.

What about reverse cards already in Anki?

The setting only changes new exports. To stop seeing reverse cards you already exported, suspend them in Anki:

  1. Open Anki and click Browse.
  2. Make sure the switch in the top left of the Browse window says Cards, not Notes. In Notes mode, suspending a note suspends its basic card too.
  3. Search for card:"Wordwise Reverse" -is:suspended. Leaving out cards that are already suspended matters: Toggle Suspend would otherwise switch the whole selection back on.
  4. Select all results (Ctrl+A or Cmd+A on Mac), then choose Cards → Toggle Suspend (Ctrl+J).

Don't use Delete here. In the Browse window, Delete removes the whole note, so the basic card for that word goes too.

Should you keep them?

Reverse cards train recall: you see the meaning and have to come up with the word. That's the skill you need for speaking and writing. If you only read in the language, basic cards are enough and you'll do fewer reviews a day.
